About the event
In the 1950s and 1960s in England, Peter and Sheila Waters were a collaborative, creative duo, each rising to great acclaim in their fields of bookbinding & conservation and calligraphy & illustration. After the family emigrated to the USA in 1971, Sheila’s “second career” was fruitful with many commissions and more personal work as her calligraphy gained in ease and freedom. She also returned to teaching after a 16-year hiatus, espousing self analysis and high standards in craft and design.
Sheila’s teaching and influence helped calligraphy blossom in the USA and beyond, as the WCG and other calligraphy societies evolved, Sheila was a beloved mentor to countless calligraphers, including her son Julian who has had a distinguished lettering design career. Sheila’s best-selling textbook Foundations of Calligraphy is now being published in a Japanese edition, marking the book’s 20th anniversary.
