About the event

WCG is excited to have our own Christen Allocco Turney, author of the "Copperplate Calligraphy Practice Book," leading four weekly workshops for anyone wanting to improve and refine their copperplate calligraphy.  Christen will show the letterforms step by step, and participants will be able to practice that week, posting homework to Padlet for Christen to see.   WCG is pleased to offer exclusive pricing for such a workshop and to be the first group to have Christen teach from her new book, "Copperplate Calligraphy Practice Book: Step-by-Step Exercises to Master Letterforms, Strokes, and More Pointed Pen Techniques for Polished Script," available from AMAZON and Barnes & Noble on August 22.

The Tech Host for this class will be our own Ginny Lockhart, who will help with any online issues you may have and demonstrate how to load homework to Padlet.

Classes will be recorded and available to view for two months after the last class.

LEVEL Some experience with pointed pen scripts required.

BIO

From the moment the tines of her pointed pen nib split, Christen Allocco Turney was hooked on calligraphy and has not looked back. She is a member of the Washington Calligraphers Guild and the International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting. Christen is the co-host of The Calligraphy Podcast and teaches students all across the globe. She works in both broad edge and pointed pen calligraphy, but has a particular love for Copperplate and its variations.

Christen is an amateur baker, winter enthusiast and Jersey girl at heart. She lives in southeastern Virginia with her husband and their sweet pit bull, Niko.

TOOLS & SUPPLIES

Below are the tools I recommend and will use for demonstrating in class. You may use different supplies based on your personal

preference, but this list is what I recommend for getting started. You can purchase calligraphy supplies from paperinkarts.com or

johnnealbooks.com.

NIBS:

I will use Hunt 101 nibs for demonstration. Purchase a minimum of five of the same nib as you may need to replace them throughout the course. Other nibs to consider trying: Nikko G, Hunt 22B, Leonardt Principle

PENHOLDER:

Oblique holder for right handed calligraphers. Lefties may use a right handed oblique, left handed oblique or a straight holder based on personal preference.

DO NOT purchase a Speedball oblique plastic holder.

Recommended options: Inkslinger 66, Turned Wood Oblique Holder, Moblique 2-in-1 (works as an oblique and straight holder)

PAPER:

You can use normal printer paper or a semi-translucent paper. You will place a guide sheet under your paper, so ensure you can see your guides through the paper. You may also print your guides and write directly on the paper.

Recommended: Borden and Riley Marker Layout Bond #37, Canson layout bond, HP Premium Choice Laser Jet

INK:

Sumi Moon Palace ink, walnut ink. You will only need one ink, but it’s fun to try a few. I will use sumi ink to demonstrate.

OTHER SUPPLIES:

Paper clips, small jam-size jar, water bucket, paper towels, match or lighter, pen and notebook for note taking, optional felt or newspaper for desk padding.
