Fresh & Fancy: Modern Illumination inspired by the Lindisfarne Gospels

We calligraphers love medieval manuscripts with their glorious illuminated letters and decorations. So Andrea will take us back 1,300 years to the Lindisfarne Gospels, helping us analyze and draw its beautiful illuminated headings. She'll show us how these letterforms inspired graphic designers from the 1920s on. To take them into the 21st century we'll create our own alphabet influenced by old and new letterforms, letting all of this flow into contemporary design. As we play we'll add "fresh & fancy" elements with bold colors to create our own Modern Illumination.

Workshop will be recorded. 

Andrea will look over participant's work on padlet in between and after classes are held.  

Materials: pencil (H-2H), eraser, ruler, tracing paper, fineliners, good quality paper like BFK Rives, gouache, pointed brush (size 0-2).  

Andrea Wunderlich is a calligrapher and book artist based in Germany whose commissions include sign painting, lettering, logo design and murals. In her artwork she loves to follow the historic paths of alphabets and transform them into expressive contemporary letters.
