About the event

Dr. Georgianna Ziegler, Head of Reference and Associate Librarian Emerita at the Folger Shakespeare Library, will lead a tour of the exhibit Little Books, Big Gifts: The Artistry of Esther Inglis at the Folger Shakespeare Library. Capacity is limited to 15.

Esther Inglis (c1570-1624) was one of the most creative women in sixteenth and seventeenth-century Britain. At a time when most women would not even have been able to write their own name, Esther Inglis mastered more than forty different styles of writing and embroidered some of the bindings on her tiny manuscripts.

Georgianna’s talk will comprise an introduction about Esther’s background, followed by a closer look at the aspects of her career and techniques that are highlighted in the cases. These include her work as a political operative, her gift-giving, her calligraphy and art work, her embroidery, and her development of a unique set of self-portraits.
