About the event
Rare, delicate and beautiful, Black Hours--15th century personal prayer books written on parchment dyed black--became a passion for Tiarna Zupan due to one of her mentors in the Society for Creative Anachronism. In this program, Tiarna will discuss the history of black Books of Hours, as well as some of the ways they were created.
After sharing her own striking documents on black, Tiarna will demonstrate techniques she has learned through trial and error as well as from discussions with other scribes who have used the black hours as exemplars for their works.
Primarily a self-taught artist, Tiarna Zupan holds the Order of the Laurel, one of the highest awards in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) for excellence in the arts and sciences. Within the SCA she is known as Faílenn Chu ingen ui Fháeláin and creates for them illuminated declarations, awards and marriage certificates from her Virginia studio.…
