Founded in 1976, the Washington Calligraphers Guild is a nonprofit organization of more than 500 U.S. and international lettering artists of all skill levels, from professional scribes to enthusiastic beginners and non-calligraphers who appreciate the lettering and book arts.
The Washington Calligraphers Guild deeply mourns the death of SHEILA WATERS, first president and founding member of WCG. Please continue here. In the photo, taken at the 25th Anniversary Exhibition opening in 2001, Sheila Waters displays a document she lettered in 1976 that invited calligraphers to join as charter members of the Guild. |

New Scripsit celebrates WCG's 45th anniversary
Julian Waters edited and designed Scripsit Vol 43 No 2 (Fall 2021), a tribute to WCG's 45th Anniversary and the calligraphers it has nurtured. The full-color 60-page magazine showcases the artwork of 26 invited and juried calligraphers interpretating the theme, "Letters Nurtured in Solitude." Their creations will also appear in a virtual exhibit.
Above: Scripsit's cover is a wraparound of Elizabeth McKee's "Long Live the Weeds No.2."
Left: Marta Legeckis' alphabet, done in what she calls "Carolingian Punk," appears in the issue.
Below: Sherri Trial's "Into The Forest" also was chosen for WCG's 45th Anniversary Scripsit.
