2020-21 Graceful Envelope Contest Winners

Graceful Envelope Contest logoThe Washington Calligraphers Guild, sponsor of the 26th annual Graceful Envelope Contest, congratulates this year's winning artists in the adult contest as well as student winners in three grade divisions.

The theme "Double Vision" was inspired by the year 2020, because only once a century does the year double up. But the Covid-19 pandemic halted WCG's normal contest schedule and the deadline was extended to March 2021. [2020-21 Call for Entries]

Christy RobbArtists were challenged to capture on an envelope whatever they see in their personal Double Vision. Winners were selected based on hand lettering, creative interpretation of the theme and effective use of color and design, including incorporation of postage stamp(s).

Adult winning envelopes are on display through 2021's summer months at:
Penny Post
1201 King Street
Alexandria, VA 22314.

Adult entries were juried by current and retired White House Chief Calligraphers Lee Ann Clark and Pat Blair and professional calligrapher/illustrator Lubna Zahid. The three Student divisions were judged by professional calligraphers and art educators Susan Easton, Nahid Tootoonchi and Rebecca Solow.

Christy Robb's playful and artful envelope was one of the winners.

People's Choice

Adult winners are on display during summer 2021 at Penny Post, 1201 King Street, Alexandria, VA 22314. Thanks to Penny Post for holding the Graceful Envelope Contest's first-ever People's Choice Award for the best adult envelope! Store patrons and passers-by voted, and their favorite, and the winner is Dorota Dylska of Poland.

About the GEC

The contest was created in 1995 by the Smithsonian Institution's National Postal Museum, which administered it until delegating responsibility to the Washington Calligraphers Guild in 2001 (joined in 2003 by the National Association of Letter Carriers). Since then the Washington Calligraphers Guild is the sole sponsor.

In addition to promoting the art of calligraphy, the Graceful Envelope Contest celebrates the role of letters in binding people together.
