Professional calligrapher Tamara Stoneburner will teach a mini-workshop focusing on the visual comparison of several calligraphic hands. She will show how to manipulate the broad-edged nib to achieve the unique characteristics of these different hands, including foundational, uncial, italic and blackletter.
Supplies: Students should bring paper and a broad-edged writing implement, which could be either a marker or a metal nib and bottle ink. There will be no materials fee.
Suitable for all levels, including those with no previous calligraphic experience. |
Sheila Waters, founding President of the Washington Calligraphers Guild and internationally known calligraphic artist and teacher, will cover the tools, techniques, and working methods that she recommends. Sheila will discuss board set-up and angles; posture; cover sheets; writing levels; characteristics of nibs and how to adjust or sharpen them for best results; selecting and preparing inks and gouache; dipping and brush-filling; methods of erasing; evaluating paper surfaces; using sandarac; how to warm up and practice effectively; using a light table; and other wonderful tips! Sheila says the workshop will focus on "... some very important things there is little time to cover in beginners' classes. In a way, these are the chemistry and physics of our subject."
Sheila will provide each student with sandarac, photocopies of several pages from her new book, and samples of a variety of papers so that students can write on a variety of surfaces. In addition to the class fee, there will be a $5 materials fee, payable directly to the instructor.
Supplies: Students should bring a lapboard, paper, drafting tape, ink, pen holder, Speedball #2 nib (or equivalent), an old brush for pen-filling, as well as notepaper and pen/pencil to take notes.

Artist Joan Machinchick will lead a demonstration, "When Artists Make Books," on the art of bookmaking. She will discuss methods of binding, historical backgrounds, and how these basic forms can be modified to convey the message of the text. Participants will make a simple pamphlet booklet which they will then use for taking notes during the class, and a small four-signature codex with soft cover. No supplies are necessary, except for a pencil for taking notes and an optional camera. In addition to the class fee, there will be a $5.00 materials fee, payable directly to the instructor. Joan will provide handouts and supplies.
This is the same workshop that Joan will present at St. John's College in Annapolis in conjunction with an exhibit of artist's books by the painter Joan Miro at the Mitchell Gallery.
