Live and Silent auctions!
Items for both auctions will be on display beginning at 10:30 am. The Guild is not set up to accept credit card transactions, so only cash and checks can be accepted. [Calligrafest is accepting donated items for these auctions; see ** below.] Click here to view just a few of the items that will be auctioned.

  • The Live Auction takes place beginning at 1 pm, with bids in $1 increments. Those unable to participate in the Live auction can enter a discrete proxy bid to be considered before the auction begins. At 12:45pm, all paper bids will be sorted, with the highest bid found for each item being entered and considered the new base price to start the auction with.
  • The Silent Auction closes at 3 pm , when the highest bidder listed on each item's sheet is announced. Participants do not have to be present to win or receive their items, as long as they provide the necessary contact information on the bidding sheet.
** If you have artworks or art-related items to donate for the auction, please contact Tamara Stoneburner. WCG will present all two-dimensional artworks and rare magazines/books in archival, acid-free sleeves or will fully mat and frame them under glass.

“When Artists Make Books” with Joan Machinchick

2:15 - 3:45

“Upgrade Your Handwriting” with Nan Jay Barchowsky

Professional calligrapher Tamara Stoneburner will teach a mini-workshop focusing on the visual comparison of several calligraphic hands. She will show how to manipulate the broad-edged nib to achieve the unique characteristics of these different hands, including foundational, uncial, italic and blackletter.

Supplies: Students should bring paper and a broad-edged writing implement, which could be either a marker or a metal nib and bottle ink. There will be no materials fee.

Suitable for all levels, including those with no previous calligraphic experience.

Sheila Waters, founding President of the Washington Calligraphers Guild and internationally known calligraphic artist and teacher, will cover the tools, techniques, and working methods that she recommends. Sheila will discuss board set-up and angles; posture; cover sheets; writing levels; characteristics of nibs and how to adjust or sharpen them for best results; selecting and preparing inks and gouache; dipping and brush-filling; methods of erasing; evaluating paper surfaces; using sandarac; how to warm up and practice effectively; using a light table; and other wonderful tips! Sheila says the workshop will focus on "... some very important things there is little time to cover in beginners' classes. In a way, these are the chemistry and physics of our subject."

Sheila will provide each student with sandarac, photocopies of several pages from her new book, and samples of a variety of papers so that students can write on a variety of surfaces. In addition to the class fee, there will be a $5 materials fee, payable directly to the instructor.

Supplies: Students should bring a lapboard, paper, drafting tape, ink, pen holder, Speedball #2 nib (or equivalent), an old brush for pen-filling, as well as notepaper and pen/pencil to take notes.

Suitable for all levels.

Artist Joan Machinchick will lead a demonstration, "When Artists Make Books," on the art of bookmaking. She will discuss methods of binding, historical backgrounds, and how these basic forms can be modified to convey the message of the text. Participants will make a simple pamphlet booklet which they will then use for taking notes during the class, and a small four-signature codex with soft cover. No supplies are necessary, except for a pencil for taking notes and an optional camera. In addition to the class fee, there will be a $5.00 materials fee, payable directly to the instructor. Joan will provide handouts and supplies.

This is the same workshop that Joan will present at St. John's College in Annapolis in conjunction with an exhibit of artist's books by the painter Joan Miro at the Mitchell Gallery.

Suitable for all levels.

Your handwriting can be legible and attractive. You can happily handwrite a novel or a thank-you note. Your writing can also be fast enough to take those quick notes from a lecture or a phone call. This workshop will show you how!

Supplies: Students should bring 8.5"x11" or 9"x12" paper. (#37 Boris White Layout is perfect and will be available from the Paper & Ink Arts booth at Calligrafest.) Also bring a pencil and the pen you most like to write with. The instructor will provide a few exemplars, including guidelines to use under unlined paper. There will be no materials fee.

Suitable for all levels, including those with no previous calligraphic experience.
